Trials of the key - 1

Here are a couple of piano solos I tried this weekend. The first is my favorite musician Yann Tiersen's Amelie and the second is of course The Beatles.

There's very minimal Garage Band involved at this stage. I would love to hear suggestions on how to improve Garage Band involvement. The piano playing skills will improve, I promise!

  1. Hey.. My comment was lost :/ so trying to reconstruct it ..

Awesome playing for a first recording attempt. Really liked the Amelie song, you've played it very well in the start and at the end. In the middle, it got a little cluttered, but I know that with more practice with recording and playing you will nail it. GBWALHFMF was also very nice :)

For the keys did you use layers or play all the key parts at once? If you did play it at once, well done with the rhythm! If you did it by layers in Garageband, I'd suggest adjusting/messing around with the volume of the different layers, rather than having the same volume for all layers.

At the start (imo) it's better to make 10 imperfect recordings, rather than to wait to record a perfect one. In the first case, you'll get much more practice playing and recording :) Keep sharing your recordings on your blog, it will be great fun for you to check in a few months later and immediately hear your progress :)

    1. Thanks for the feedback Adi! I love getting comments on my blog!
Yeah, Amelie got messed up in the middle but I didn't want to stop because it doesn't have multiple layers - it was just one straight recording right through. In GBWALHFMF (you still haven't stopped your abbreviations I see), the beat is the second layer. I guess I should start adding more layers with other instruments because the piano alone sounds too incomplete. Of course I should start playing better too :P Maybe we can collaborate at some point.

  2. Sure thing :) Next guitar thing I record, I'll send to you for keys :) Hopefully I'll be done with my thesis by next month and can get back to recording soon
